What might be lost in leaving it up to the developer?

Depending on the developer's experience, one might lose expertise in
designing for the disabled.  Nobody thinks about that *quite* the same
way as those of us who are; probably the able-bodied folk don't have
the blessing of continual motivation to consider the issue. (Insert
wry grin here.)

If any other communities are dealing with non-traditional family
structures (yes, that includes us polyamorous folks) there may
be some "two adults / monogamous marriage" assumptions that get
in the way of a good fit.

A good developer can work around her own personal assumptions to
fit the client, though.
