Just read letter re: ants. Having lived for several years in New York I learned the solution for roaches which is also effective for ants. Most "non-toxic" "miracle cures" sole active ingredient is BORIC ACID available for a couple of dollars a pound at most pharmacies. It is truely harmless to humans: its primary use is as eye wash. To insects however, it is deadly. The reason for its success is that they are incapable of, to put it declicately, "passing wind", and after ingesting it they simply blow up. They don't die immediately however, and thus you don't get the "quick kill" gratification of insecticides, but they instead get it on their bodies and carry it back to the nest where it kills others. The process is slow (two to three weeks) but very effective. Simply sprinkle or blow dust under cabinets, refrigerators, along paths of travel, etc. and then wait. It's cheap, safe, and it works.
