Technical Guide up during month of March. In March(starts 4th March) at the EVIS site(www.gaia.org) you will be able to share in the experiences of the Findhorn Foundations Ecological building programme. This is a good opportunity to get an overview of their programme, or to just read information about their particular 'tested' methods of building. The easiest way to access these pages is to visit http://www.gaia.org/evis/whatsnew.html There will be approximately 3 articles per week during March - from the book Simply Build Green, a Technical Guide to the Ecological Houses at the Findhorn Foundation. In displaying these articles I'll be following the order of the table of contents but only using some of the topics within each section .(below) ********************* SIMPLY BUILD GREEN Technical Guide to the Ecological Houses at the Findhorn Foundation The Eco-Village Project at the Findhorn Foundation in Scotland has generated an enormous amount of interest from individuals of all levels of experience: from architect, engineers, builders to the do-it-yourself or self-build enthusiast who want to live in a more sustainable way. Simply Build Green offers a detailed description of the theory, practice and products used in the Eco-Village Project and is presented as both a working and reference document which will be a help both to people with a general interest as well as specifically to those in the building professions. John Talbott is a registered professional engineer and technical consultant to the Findhorn Foundation. He was responsible for the ongoing planning of the Ecological Village Project, and has worked with a number of other professionals in developing the various ecological features of the buildings, including the unique system known as the Breathing Wall. He has also initiated the development of renewable energy systems and was responsible for the erection of the Foundation's first 75kW wind generator. He is currently helping to build Europe's first "Living Machine", a natural method for waste water treatment using whole eco-systems. ______________________________ CONTENTS: Preface Letter - Jonathon Porritt Acknowledgements Section 1 - Introduction Who This Technical Guide is For The Findhorn Foundation Introduction to Ecological Building Ecological Building Building Biology - Baubiologie Original Brief for the Foundation's Eco-Houses Principal Features Section 2 - Construction Types Introduction Foundations Floor Construction Wall Construction Roof Construction The 'Breathing Wall' Structural System Building in the Round Section 3 - Materials Introduction Timber Stone Clay Insulation Composite Boards/Sheet Materials Plaster and Plasterboard Copper Turf Floors and Floor Coverings Paints and Preservatives Section 4 - Energy Introduction Insulation and Overall U-Values in Walls, Roofs and Floors Solar Energy in Buildings Passive Solar Active Solar Glazing Heating Systems Lighting Appliances Wind Energy and Other Renewable Energy Sources Section 5 - Other Features Introduction Services and Infrastructure Siting and Geopathic Stress Radon Protection Water Conservation Waste Water Treatment Recycling of Rainwater Electrical System and Electrostress Shared Facilities Cost Considerations Retrofitting Existing Buildings Appendices Ecological Ratings of Materials from Baubiologie Energy Requirement to Produce Various Materials Comparison of Common Insulation Materials Sponsors and Suppliers References and Book List Eco-Villages and Sustainable Communities The Eco-village Information Service http://www.gaia.org ______________________________________________________________________________ Eco-Village auditing will provide a measuring rod for existing villages and communities to compare their current status with ideal goals for environmental, cultural, and social sustainability.
