Clare Cooper Marcus, Professor Emeritus of UC Berkeley's College of Environmental Design, will present a lecture on Thursday, March 13 in San Francisco on the topic, "PUBLIC SPACE IN SHARED HOUSING." Cooper Marcus will discuss design considerations for semi-public/semi-private community spaces within clustered housing such as co-housing projects. She has observed that design professionals do not fully understand the new village genre of outdoor space and will offer her insight into residents' needs and rights, especially those of children. Cooper Marcus is internationally recognized for her pioneering research during 25 years of teaching sociological aspects of architecture, land-use planning and landscape design - particularly urban open space. She has authored several books, including "Architecture As If People Mattered", " People Places", and "House As a Mirror of Self", and is currently writing a book on the healing power of gardens in hospitals. Clare is also an avid researcher of cohousing in Europe and North America and serves as an advisor to The CoHousing Network. The lecture is co-sponsored by ADPSR (Architects, Planners & Designers for Social Responsibility), East Bay AIA COTE, Urban Ecology, and the Ecological Design Institute. It will be held at the PG&E Energy Center, 851 Howard St., two blocks south of Powell Street Bart. 6:00pm reception, 6:30 lecture. $5 donation. Call 510-273-2428 to confirm event dates and topics. (This announcement forwarded to cohousing-L by Don Lindemann of The CoHousing Network.)
