Joanie, Rich's description is pretty much my experience. The "chemicals" come in from a jug which gets pumped out. They are pretty benign. One advantage is that they contain a little scale preventer. As the wash water courses through, it leaves a little scale. The only other way I read was to install a water softener. Interestingly, the water is supposed to be between a certain hardness and a certain softness. Noise is very low. Put on some low music. Steam, no problem. A welcome addition to our Utah air.
