RE: Washer/Dryer in Common House/Units

Just a couple of notes about washers and dryers in the CH. We have a washer
and dryer in our house (we had them in our old place) and so did not have to
use them until recently, when our dryer broke. When it first broke we
momentarily panicked, then remembered the ones in the CH. Life was simple
again.

Our washers and dryers (two of each, all donated) are in a relatively poorly
lit but uncluttered and well-enough organized space in the basement. We
debated a lot about designing a laundry on the main floor, but space was at a
premium and we had to shoehorn all the other rooms in (resulting in a miracle
of efficient design by our architects Mary Kraus and Laura Fitch, both of
Pioneer Cohousing in Amherst- thanks again). Designs with a laundry on the
first floor inevitably ended up with a tiny space next to what were supposed
be quieter rooms. Putting the laundry in the basement allowed 1) plenty of
space as well as places to put tables and 2) kept the noise and smell (some
folks are chemically sensitive) tucked away from the main use spaces.
