"Cohousing - coming of age"
by Charles Smith, special to the [San Francisco, CA] Chronicle
subhead: 'Intentional communities' one answer to an increasingly
alienated society'

http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/chronicle/archive/2002/02/09/H
O57808.DTL

or a way to get there via short URLs, today:

http://sfgate.com/homeandgarden

and it's the top link.

(Hey, it's even linked with a thumbnail picture from the main sfgate.com
home page!)

Lots of colorful pictures, too - both on the web and in print.

The lead: "in our sprawling, mobile society, the traditional sources of
community -- family, friends, church or social groups -- are often
scattered over the landscape, physically separated by great distances.
"While these far-flung networks suffice for many of us, others yearn for
a greater sense of community closer to home.

If you can pick up an SF Chronicle today (2/9/02), it occupies about 2/3s
of the front page of the Home & Garden Section (G), and more than that of
the continuing page.

Communities pictured/covered include Pleasant Hill (CA) Cohousing,
Temescal Creek (Oakland,CA), Doyle Street (Emeryville, CA), Temescal
Commons (Oakland, CA),

Excerpt relevant to a recent CoHo-L thread on diversity: "Judging by the
diverse range of residents in Bay Area cohousing communities --
straights, gays, singles, families with young children and retirees --
the appeal of this model cuts across all social lines."

Excerpt re affordability/energy: "Cohousing homes are smaller than their
suburban counterparts, averaging about 1,200 square feet as opposed to
2,100 square feet, allowing greater density and the obvious savings of
heating and cooling less interior space.
[...]
"Not only are utility bills lower, but studies have found that the number
of car trips made is considerably lower in cohousing communities, as
neighbors tend to share rides to the market and other typical
destinations, eat out less often (as a result of dinenrs in the common
house), and fulfill at least some of their social life in thehir
community."

A bunch of the article talks about environmentally sensitive design, as
practiced in the design of a couple of communities.

Only visible error: A reference to The Cohousing Co. as "the Cohousing
Group"

Resources mentioned: Cohousing Tours (formerly led by Ken Norwood, now by
Joani Blank and Katie Hester), CoHoCo., TCN.

Notable omissions: Lists of other Bay Area communities; references to
TCN's other services besides the Journal; East Bay Cohousing (EBCOHO)
mention/contact info.
