The problem with providing affordable rental units is, that if the houses
are expensive, the rent is going to be high and basically out of reach of 
lower income people.  In a sense, it doesn't widen the opening (from a
socio-economic perspective) a whole lot.  This has been the case with the
two rental units we have.
