Two warnings, and one helpful idea: Sometimes, when construction schedules go the way they go, folks really want to put some of their stuff in teh new house before the C of O is ready. If the builder is OK with it, your lawyer can draft a simple legal thing to let folks do that (it acknowledges that the stuff is potentially subject to construction-related damage at the owners risk, etc.) Sometimes, when construction schedules go the way they go, folks really want to move in before the C of O is ready. You really can't do that. We did a lot of shuffling around via various rental houses in towns around here, as folks moved out of their pre-coho apartments based on construction schedules, and had no place to live for a while. One thing that worked out well that I can recommend: Each household had a volunteer move-in coordinator, in our case, it was someone who had already moved in, or, at least, someone who wasn't also about to move. The move-in coordinator was the one who put out the emails that said "The Jones are moving on Thursday. They would like meals on Thursday and Friday (no anchovies, please) and help with packing their linens on Tuesday, and care for their chinchilla on Thursday, and help unpacking their dishes on Friday. Let me know what you can do and when.". The coordinator would be the only one who needed to communicate with the (usually harried) move-in family, and it meant that all this vital help showed up at the right time with a minimum of hassle for the move-in family. Helped reduce stress, dramatically, and also reminded folks of WHY they were putting up with moving, and also gave folks a taste of community interconnectedness before they dove in to the post-move 'nesting' phase. -- Jim Snyder-Grant jimsg [at] newview.org 18 Half Moon Hill Acton MA 01720 New View Cohousing http://www.newview.org ----- Original Message ----- From: "Ted Chesky" <tchesky [at] earthlink.net> To: <cohousing-l [at] cohousing.org> Sent: Sunday, January 19, 2003 10:19 PM Subject: [C-L]_problems at move-in time? Hi, Great Oak Cohousing in Ann Arbor Michigan will be open for business sometime this June. We're trying to be proactive about setting up some processes, policies, or whatever to deal with problems that might come up around our move-in time, or shortly thereafter. Are there any issues that commonly cause problems in communities around this time? How have you handled them? We'd welcome any information, suggestions, or warnings you might have.
