RE: vegetarian meals

We actually didn't have any vegetarians in our community until recently!!
Hard to believe. We adopted a set of food "preferences" that we sometimes
follow and sometimes don't - they aren't binding but were important to those
who take care to always eat organic. We sometimes have meat and sometimes
do not. I think Two Acre Wood is on the "libertarian" end of meal prep with
no set expectation or schedule for meals, and this applies to what gets
cooked, too.

Recently a couple of members stopped eating meat and a small group has
stopped eating wheat. As a cook, I try to find alternatives when I can, and
have experimented with both meat and vegetarian meals. I also try to do
something kid-friendly (plain noodles, plain chicken) if the meal isn't. In
our community, it is up to the cooks to cook what they want, and we use our
meal sign-up sheets to disclose organicness, degree of vegetarianism, etc.
Then individuals can decide if they can eat the meal to be cooked. Before I
started to cook in the community, I thought I'd resent making accomodations
for different preferences, but I find that I enjoy finding out what the kids
like and feel creatively challenged to cook stuff that everyone can eat. So
it's different from what I thought it would be. (This last is my theme song
for moving into cohousing.)

I've noticed that some people don't feel right about spending extra money on
organic ingredients or natural meats. To them, the higher value is
affordable dinners. With full disclosure on the meal sheets, everyone gets
to make informed consent to that kind of meal.
