To add to what Liz said, "affordability" is usually defined as a house that is available to the person with an income that is at or below the average income of the area. That leaves a big gap between those who are living on earned income and have no savings and those who are living on income from investments -- two different animals. And an even bigger gap between those who are supporting their parents and those whose parents are giving them an inheritance "early".

But in general, "affordable" means housing that is average or below average for your area rather than homes that are above the average.

(Another distinction between cohousing and _some_ of the other kinds of intentional communities: cohousing requires understanding the housing and the housing market.)
