Chris writes: "the desire to start from scratch, do everything yourself, to not depend on other people for anything." This is interesting. People who are intentionally becoming part of a community want not to depend on others for anything. Is that it? Or is it that they do not want to depend on the dominant culture for anything if they can avoid it? Sounds more like it. Of course, every person is different; both (or neither) may be right. Anyway, it is expensive doing everything from scatch, ignoring the wisdom (yes, there is some!) of those who have gone before. Affordability is a concern. Rebuilding (or redesigning) the wheel is expensive. The same community which motivates me to become an activist requires a financial commitment that keeps me tied to a job. The time and energy commitment for the job prevents me from becoming much of an activist. Exploring innovative ways to maintain the parking lot is not the way I want to invest my life energy. I would rather discover a way to free my life energy--to work on changing the health care system, among other things. Jan Sunward Ann Arbor, MI
