Cohousing Design Studio

Hello all,

I have been interested in co-housing for some time, both as a potential resident and as an architect. This spring, I am teaching a design studio at Iowa State University about housing and have chosen to focus my main project on the design of a co-housing project as an alternative to the typical market-rate condo projects that students typically encounter.

I am looking for the following:
1. Co-housing projects, either built or under discussion, in Iowa. I would like to be able to get my students involved in a dialogue with a co-housing community so that they can better understand priorities, etc. and could receive feedback on their design ideas. I'm also interested in what's around locally from a personal point-of-view.

2. Co-housing projects, either built or under discussion, in New York City (any borough). The site for the studio has been determined by outside forces to be in Manhattan. This goes against the physical norm of most published co-housing communities but on the other hand opens up interesting possibilities. We will be taking a fieldtrip to NYC in late February and I'd love to find individuals, groups, built projects, etc. I'd also really like to hear about any projects in the area that have been attempted and failed.

3. Any other resources that anyone thinks might be helpful. Through this studio, I hope that my students can come to understand that "housing" does not have to be either a single-family suburban home or a highend loft condo but can be something more sustainable and forward-thinking, both technically and socially.

Thanks in advance,
--
