Hi fellow cohousers, Well, I guess that depends on how you see things--is the glass half full or half empty? I certainly didn't see it as time "robbed from my life." My attitude was "what could I do with this time in my life that's more important?" and the answer was "not much." So as frustrating as it was, I learned a great deal, met a lot of wonderful people that became friends, developed as a person, and learned new skills that could very well help me get into a new career. As long as you go into your project knowing that there will always be unexpected events; nothing will work out the way you expected; there will be bumps along the way and even U-turns; you will get though it ok and will be a better person at the end of the experience. Zev was right when he said it was the "longest and most expensive personal growth experience of you life." --Diane (of Diane and Dave) JP Cohousing, Boston ------------------------------ Message: 2 Date: Thu, 30 Nov 2006 15:02:53 -0500 From: Dave and Diane <daveanddee [at] verizon.net> Subject: Re: [C-L]_ Cohousing-L Digest, Vol 34, Issue 36 Shari et al: Our group, Jamaica Plain Cohousing of Boston, Mass., self-developed, used the project manager-general-contractor-architect team model and was completed in 2005. Originally we were advised to avoid the "heroic" model of self-development and, consequently, spent two years searching for appropriate partners. In the end we were not able to find an able and willing developer partner in Massachusetts, and ended up doing self-development anyway. Diffused responsibility and the consensus decision-making process certainly increased the project length and contributed to a number of design problems. Having a developer partner ride herd on us might have shortened the project, but design problems occur no matter what the team. All in all, the big difference would have been less time robbed from our lives (10 years for me) and less frustration. Dave Nathan JP Cohousing
