FRESNO COHOUSING PRESENTS: "A CELEBRATION OF COMMUNITY" You are invited to join the party in celebration of our groundbreaking: Sunday, May 6 from 1 to 4 pm - 2658 East Alluvial Ave. Fresno Cohousing community designated first multi-family residential project for "Fresno Green" Program and far exceeds energy-efficiency qualifications FRESNO, CA; April 19, 2007 -After 2 ½ years of planning, the members of Fresno Cohousing will break ground at the site of their future cohousing community on Sunday May 6, 2007. The 28-household cohousing neighborhood is being built on a 2.8 acre site located at 2658 East Alluvial Ave. between Chestnut and Willow in north Fresno. Fresno Cohousing is an innovative, environmentally-conscious neighborhood being created with the active involvement of the future residents who will all know each other before they move in. Fresno Cohousing is the first multi-family residential project to qualify under the new pilot "Fresno Green" incentive program sponsored by the City of Fresno. According to Karana Hattersley-Drayton in the City's Planning and Development Department, the cohousing neighborhood far exceeded the qualifications necessary for the program which is based on the national LEED-certified program to encourage people to use "green" building practices, materials and design to produce homes that are energy efficient and friendly to the environment. Fresno Cohousing will utilize state-of-the-art green building technologies and materials. Homes in cohousing neighborhoods across the United States are known for reducing energy consumption up to 50% as compared to homes in the surrounding neighborhoods. The Fresno Cohousing neighborhood, named "La Querencia," is believed to be the most green and sustainable residential project of its size in Fresno and possibly in the California Central Valley. Celebration of Community La Querencia's groundbreaking, "Celebration of Community" is an afternoon party with festivities taking place from 1:00 to 4:00 pm. The celebration will include activities for children and adults. For the kids, there will be an activity area with face-painting, a bounce house and games. For adults, there will be an entertainment tent including music, and information about green building and sustainable living. La Querencia Fresno Cohousing will consist of 28 energy-efficient homes, a pool, community garden, kid's play area, and a 3,000 sq. ft. multi-purpose Common House. La Querencia will be the first cohousing community in Fresno, one of 20 in California and one of close to 100 in the United States. The future residents hold free information meetings and are open to new member households. The cohousing community will feature private homes and shared common facilities, including a clubhouse or Common House where residents hold classes and meetings, socialize and where neighbors typically eat together two or three times each week.
