Dear All,

Could not say it better than Matt has. Would suggest seeing what are laws in your municipality before any discussion. BTW, we -finally- built and moved in 9 years ago. We made amazingly few rules [no hammocks screwed into trees was one of the only ones. Because the repetitive movement can damage a tree to point of killing it.] As far as I know, we have two neighbors who own guns for hunting; they know how to prepare game for food.

Maybe we spent so much energy on nuts and bolts development stuff--we didn't have the information now archived from this List readily available-- that we didn't make rules around some issues that sometimes come up here. I do admire the conceptual way newer communities do discuss certain pieces.

In any case, congratulations on getting to ground-breaking!

Subject: Re: [C-L]_ Gun ownership
Eugene Downtown Cohousing has selected a contractor and hopes to break
ground in July. Discussions continue and I have a request for comments
and information about how established communities have dealt with the
question of gun ownership. Have guns been banned completely? How are
police officers, reserve officers and permits to carry dealt with?
What storage rules can be required and how are they enforced? Any other
suggestions gleaned from experience?

Before running off and writing a bunch of rules, I suggest you research
the local laws. I think it's a bit pointless to create rules when there
are already applicable laws.

This isn't specific to firearms either. Creating rules that are already
covered by laws and ordinances just adds to the paperwork and increases
the chance that someone's eyes will glaze over trying to read them.

It's not what I know that counts.
It's what I can remember in time to use.
