At RoseWind, here in Port Townsend WA, we have
1) a sign up list of areas to attend to, with columns by month: kid room,
kitchen between meals, halls and foyer, lavatories, etc. How well it works
depends on the individuals: some sign up and never do much of anything about
their area, others really clean.
2) periodic work parties, for a few hours after our business meeting, about
every other month in winter, every month in warmer weather. Jobs both
indoors and out. On a beautiful day, almost everyone chooses the outdoor
jobs; the common house benefits when the weather is not so nice. Kitchen
appliances get cleaned, landscape tasks done, depends on what's on a list.
3) Then there are those of us one member has dubbed the Diligencia! It
definitely takes that: people who simply notice that the kitchen laundry
needs to be run or hung, that those egg cartons have been sitting in the
front hall for a week, that the doorknob is loose, and all the other untidy
bits that happen.
Some people do none of the above. Some of the best cleaning happens when people are sponsoring social events in the CH for outside groups, and want to be sure it is clean for "their" guests.
