Chair lifts are good, economical and work well but with 2
qualifications
1) If a person is in a wheelchair, they must have one at the top and
one at the bottom -unless it is a larger 'platform lift' (about 3'6"
square) that is an open platform that rides up and down the stairs
and can take a wheelchair.
2) The code in my area (Manitoba) recently changed to state that
there must be enough available width left on the stair (+/- min. 3')
when the chair is being used (on the assumption that it would stop
functioning in a fire and the stairs still must maintain the correct
exit width. -so check local codes.

Hello, Another thought: For decades I have seen advertisements of "chairstair climbers". These are foldable chairs that sit on a rail by the side of a flight of stairs. A user brings the chair to the top or bottom of the stairs, unfolds it, sits down, and rides up or down to the other endof the stairs. This presumably costs a lot less than $19K, and additionally the staircase remains usable in its normal capacity. Or that can use a converted closet space as the "shaft" for it, and would need a ground pit or mechanical room. Some can be housed in the middle of a staircase surround. Since it is for a common house, which would get much less use than say, a commercial bldg or apt bldg, a light use elevator made for home use might be a better fit in thisinstance. Check the links I sent in a previous response to this subject. ~Lise _________________________________________________________________ Cohousing-L mailing list -- Unsubscribe, archives and other info at: http://www.cohousing.org/cohousing-L/
