Something to remember about this process is when you build a unit or a house, you are only the first occupant. There will be others who will live there later after you. You may at some future point need to sell your unit and if it is not very attractive to other people you will have a harder time selling it and you might even lose money. The market for cohousing is a fraction of the local real estate market, and if what you design and build only suits a tiny percentage of that limited market your future buyers market will be very small indeed. A lesson in point from my community: A member built a very expensive, designer house against the advice of several residents. That house has been on the market for more than 3 years with nary a nibble, its too expensive for the market here. So it may very well end up as a rental house unless the price drops and the owner takes a considerable loss. Rob Sandelin Sharingwood
