Patty Mara asks why my post about cohousing is any different from what one finds in a 'lively neighborhood or extended family group' and my answer can only address my own experience. Before I moved to cohousing I lived in a condominium community in San Francisco for 4 years. I am a very friendly outgoing person. In all those years I never shared as much as a cup of coffee with a neighbor, nor was I ever past the living room of more than 3 homes. The culture is simply not set up to encourage that. Some of my cohousing neighbors moved from smaller communities, with single family homes, and they might have shared pizza or a yearly block party, but nothing like I experience everyday living in cohousing. Perhaps it's about interest or intent, or who knows what. As for extended family, mine lives scattered from Kansas to Mexico to Denver. Perhaps those of us who don't have close family are also more likely to be drawn to cohousing. Terri Hupfer Pleasant Hill Cohousing Bay Area, CA
