Hi all --l'm hearing what Craig is saying about the need for more energy and effort needed to upkeep a system like this. I'm sure Coho/US would be delighted to have someone step forward and help out with this.
Barring this ... perhaps we can have the best of both worlds. What if CohoUS adopted the map that Adi sent? http://bit.ly/cohousing-community-mapIt's not as complete as the CohoUS map but it can be updated by individuals much like Wikipedia. Then, thru this list, we could encourage people to add their community to the list or update information about their community on a regular basis. Self-maintenance!
Do you think this would work? Ann Zabaldo Takoma Village Cohousing Washington, DC Principal, Cohousing Collaborative, LLC Falls Church, VA 703 663 3911 On Aug 17, 2010, at 12:18 PM, Naomi Anderegg wrote:
There's a problem with this map & Alabama / the South East / maybe just the entire map. When you're zoomed out, there's a green flag in Alabama, down nearMontgomery, indicating "a state, province or country where one or morecommunities is located." But, when you click on that flag or zoom in, you see that, zoomed in, there are no red or green flags anywhere in Alabama. I found the same to be true of Louisiana, Tennessee, and Mississippi. Could the green pins represent something other than what they're said to at the top of thescreen?Maybe there's just a green flag for each and every state, regardless of whether that state has cohousing? (Thus, all the green flags up & down the East Coast?)Naomi ________________________________ From: Craig Ragland <craigragland [at] gmail.com> To: Cohousing-L <cohousing-l [at] cohousing.org> Sent: Tue, August 17, 2010 10:56:05 AM Subject: Re: [C-L]_ Map of Cohousing Communities Hi All, Here's what we said about the new Directory map in the latest issue of Cohousing Now! ------------------- Cohousing Map Want to know where you can find cohousing? Check out our new map http://www.cohousing.org/directory/map The map shows you a green pin for every state where you can find cohousing. Click on a green pin to zoom in on that state and then a red pin to see the community name. Click the name to see its Cohousing directory listing. Use the Zoom Control on the upper left corner of the map to zoom in on areas. Thanks to Tony Sirna for creating this Cohousing version of the Intentional Community map: ------------------- Tony is the programmer behind most of the ic.org website. The Cohousing.org directory map was created based on the ic.org full directory map, but only shows those communities in the Cohousing.org Directory. I'm unaware of a similar Cohousing map for Europe, but go here: http://directory.ic.org/maps/ to see one for the broader category of Intentional Communities in Europe (note: the map first opens to the US, which is the primary focus of the Fellowship for Intentional Community, but you can scroll to the right to see the communities in Europe. As for hand-tweaking these, perhaps in the future anybody who "owns" the directory record for a particular community will have more control over their map representation. Is this something people would value if it was implemented? A few of months ago, I met with Tony Sirna and Raines Cohen at Daybreak Cohousing to discuss possible features. The current features of both the Intentional Communities Directory and the Cohousing Directory have been defined by a very few people over many years and input from interested parties is always welcome... if of sufficient interest, somebody reading this might start a new thread. An analysis I did a while ago that I think isstill largely correct (due to the stall) showed about 70 built or sited communities missing from the map.Al replied: Do you know if there's a simlar map for Europe? Fred replied (p2)--- Newer map --- There is now an automated map also based on Google maps associated with the cohousing directory at http://www.cohousing.org ( directly at http://www.cohousing.org/directory ). See the link at the top of the directory page to the first map. It maps communites at two levels 1) on a US map one pin per state or region 2) Zoomed in to a state or region for one pin per community. The latter do not attempt to map exact location. Tho the automated approach has the disadvantage that it is not hand tweaked , it is much easier to maintain and keep complete and up to date.
