I think this must be the case, because they look new when we first get them.
After they are washed, they get kind of fluffy. But I'll ask around and find
out what the full story is.

speaking for myself, I work at a hospital and often, surgical towels do 
not get used and we can take the unused ones home. great for spills and 
all kinds of cleaning. as for liquid soap,I recommend Dr Bronner's.
