Couldn't not chip in with the cork tile debate. I have a type of cork tile in my bathroom and it has all the favourable properties you mention. I don't know whether they are available in the States, I bought mine here in England. The tiles are cork sandwiched between a stronger outer clear cover something akin to vinyl. They're much more durable than plain cork and don't stain or wear like plain cork which needs resealing from time to time. If you can find them I think it would be worth the search. Naomi, I have seen cork flooring in a super busy place and am stunned at how beautifully it has held up. while we do not have it in our CommonHouse, it is in the large health food shop in Kingston, Ny. It gets many many many people walking on it-- and rolling carts as well as commercial delivery handtrucks over it. It has been there several years of rough wear and it looking good. I've heard/read good things--that it's eco-friendly, hygienic, has more give and cushioniness than wood, absorbs sound well, etc. It seems like it would be a good compromise when you need to get your flooring redone. But I don't have any personal experience with it, myself. I don't think it lasts as long as well-finished wood flooring, but I think that it probably holds up longer than carpet... I'm really just speculating on that, though.
