In all likelihood, the kidnapper will be diagnosed as a psychopath. Psycopaths are intelligent and manipulative; they can and will act charming, or sincere, or contrite, if any of that helps them get what they want. Unless equipped with special training, it's not easy for ordinary people to pierce the veil of deceit.
