I would suggest that you don't want to talk with your local fire marshall until you have a clear strategy/approach and you understand how what you are asking for fits into the local codes. If you just go in and ask, you'll get the retail answers which may or may not work for you. I really thing this is a realm you want to work closely with your architect and civil engineer on and let them do the talking to fire marshall. But, of course, you need creative design professionals that are ready to fight for what you want and understand how to do that.
