Emilie, new members have read our vision and mission statements. The more details the mission includes the better. They have also been to four business meetings, as a minimum. That way they are able to ask their questions, and we can ask them enough questions to be sure they know what they're getting into. In the end, it's their choice whether or not to join. We don't have anyone sign a values statement, but they do sign papers to be a legal member of the LLC when they make their capital contribution to become a full member. The LLC operating agreement spells out what we are planning to do. Hope this helps. Required attendance at (most) meetings is a good idea, I think.
