I am a facilitator for FCE (Foundation for Community Encouragement) in
Community Building Workshops. At a recent Facilitator Roundtable in Chicago
I learned of the following training opportunity. I am sharing this
information with you since I thought this would be of interest to members of
this list.

Training Information

Since 1984 FCE http://www.fce-community.org/index.shtml has been
introducing people to the excitement and joy of connecting deeply with
others. This training is designed for people who facilitate group dynamics
within ongoing communities and will strengthen your capacity to deal
effectively with the specific challenges that arise within those contexts.

When- May 3 - 5, 2001, 9:00 am - 5:00pm
Where - FCE Offices, Cascade Conference Room, 9750 3rd Ave, NE Suite #400,
Seattle WA 89115
How to Register - Call 888-784-9001 for more information or to register by
phone.

What training includes:

* An understanding of a basic framework to facilitate ongoing community
meetings
* An understanding of different decision-making styles to use with your
groups
* An ability to deal with difficult behaviors that show up in your meetings
* An ability to balance the need to accomplish specific tasks with the need
to listen deeply to one another and to what is wanting to emerge through the
group
* An ability to identify and work with elements of individual and group
"shadow" that may get in the way of your group working effectively.

Who are the Trainers:

Ron Kertzner partners with individuals and organizations to create
collaborative, learning communities. These communities foster an
environment where:
* individuals contribute their unique perspective while working together to
achieve common goals (collaboration);
* people increase their capacity to achieve the results they desire
(learning); and
* people are seen not only for what they can do but also for who they are
(community).

Ron's clients are from the public and private sector and during the past
three years he has worked with members of the US House of Representatives
interested in creating a more collaborative atmosphere for governance. He
has also been involved with multi-party projects designed to create healthy
communities and a sustainable environment. In the private sector, he
created leadership programs for General Electric and Time-Warner.

Barbara Coffman has 20 years of living in various forms of community, with
thorough emergence in both the potential and shadows of living in a
collective. The same sure sense of a more natural way to live and
fulfillment for human beings through community took Barbara into the field
of organizational development. "Work places are, after all, communities
too" says Barbara.

Barbara has helped people organize, dream, govern, heal, celebrate, worship,
create, and learn, outside the parameters of business as usual. Barbara is
passionate about new ranges of communication, self-reflection, group
dialogue capacities, honed decision-making capabilities, and the "letting go
practices" that are needed to live together in a mature way. Barbara lives
in Ashland, Oregon with her husband in an intentional community.

COST : $895 (scholarships available)

Following is a letter from Sarah Jane Menato from FCE:

I am writing to let you know about a three-day training to build and deepen
the skills of people who facilitate group dynamics. FCE and Cohousing
Resources are sponsoring the event here in Seattle. The training has been
specifically designed to be of maximum value to people in the Cohousing
arena.

There is a resurgence in our society of a desire for, and interest in,
community. However it is seems that the capacity for the actual experience
of community has to be encouraged and supported for it to emerge. The art
of connecting meaningfully to another human being is on the endangered
species list along with other gifts that are essential for people to not
just survive, but to thrive.

Many people are looking for community and a place to belong, hoping to end a
pervasive sense of isolation and live a more meaningful, connected life.
Cohousing is one powerful manifestation of this. However, the process of
taking a heart impulse (to live in community), and manifesting a physical
project, (building homes) is complex and is not in itself assurance that the
people involved will experience community when "move in" occurs. Building
the experience of community requires an investment of time, energy and
resources every bit as deliberate and intense as building the structure.
The plumbing, electricity and spatial relationships of our human
connectedness require a great deal of expertise!!

The three-day training outlined in the enclosed flyer will benefit people
involved in cohousing who are committed to being connected meaningfully and
authentically to other human beings in an ongoing way. The training will
strengthen your ability to listen deeply to another human being and also to
be heard. Discovery of new and effective communication practices will be
encouraged. Specific attention will also be given to the more effective use
of consensus as a decision making model.

Within the developing structure of a physical community, the capacity of
each individual for effective communication and connectedness must be
recognized as a critical factor in achieving the experience of community. A
dual process of stewarding your emotional investment in cohousing, as well
as your financial one, must be in place. Cohousing groups that disintegrate
tend not to be able to identify and accept achievable goals because they
lack the necessary group skills.

Please seriously consider participating in this three-day event. It will be
a rare opportunity to go to a deep level with substantial human beings who
are committed to ensuring that the experience of community isn't lost to our
society and world at large. It would be wonderful to have you join us.

I hope to hear from you soon, best wishes,

Sarah-Jane Menato
