All but seven of the units at Sand River, (senior cohousing in Santa
Fe), have two bedrooms. The thinking is that not only do they serve as
a guest room, but they could accommodate live-in help. Our Common House
has a library. We have discussed the possibility of converting it into
a room for a helper for several of the one bedroom units - if/when
several of those residents were to need help at the same time. Currently
we have a couple living in two separate units who share a helper who
comes in daily. There are also two other residents who have a helper
come in a few days a week.
We have no policy, but rather the understanding that we will help each other until we can't. We have a Health and Wellness Team who coordinate the community help for folks who need it short term. So far that's translated to help with meals, laundry, etc. during/after a surgery or illness.

The group consisted of our three retired couples and singles and couples mostly on the other side of 50. We raised a broad range of subjects and found the discussion meaningful and fruitful. We plan to continue our conversation. One topic was possible structures to put in place to aid aging folks who need some forms of assistance. As a caring community, we want to be able to help our neighbors in need, at least to the extent we are able. We wondered if other cohousing communities had established such structures, or related policies, procedures, etc.? We would be grateful to hear any cohousing examples addressing the needs of aging folks in a concrete way and what you have done. Thank you. In the new construction we have wider hallways in the units and large bathrooms. Residents who bought in soon enough could choose higher toilets. We have elevators in our underground garage. That's all I remember. Oh, most entrances have automatic doors. (This is probably code.) This includes: - at least one ramp to buildings not at ground level; - front doors that are wide enough for wheel-chairs; - handicap-accessible walk-in showers, including hand-held shower nozzles and room for a folding bench, in main floor bathrooms; - I think the folding bench, high toilets, and grab bars were all options. You don't need to be elderly to appreciate these features. They can come in handy when you have elderly or handicapped visitors, and after certain surgeries. And it turns out that they can make it easier to sell units.
