We don?t know yet how many > households plan to install their own washers and dryers > Would appreciate any input We have 3 commercial washers and 3 commercial dryers in our community of 13 households. I don't know how that number was chosen though I suspect some research was done to arrive at that number. Only one household has hookups for laundry. Our commercial machines are stackables so the dryer sits on top of the washer. We chose this configuration because our laundry room is limited in size. We chose to have common laundry for both environmental and cost reasons, i.e. to save on water usage and the cost of water usage. We have a sign-up sheet in the common house laundry room where people sign up to use the machines. We limit use to between 8:00 am and 9:00 pm when our guest rooms are occupied because our guest rooms are next to the laundry room. If there are no guests then residents can use the machines anytime. The person responsible for the common house laundry signs up for a slot on the schedule just like the residents do. The sign-up schedule is usually pretty full, though there are lulls occasionally. Consequently, the machines get pretty heavy use and are often in a state of repair. Douglas G Larson, Songaia Cohousing, Bothell, Washington
