                          Dear Scott,

*You're receiving this email because you signed up for Keep it in the
ground, our new climate change series. We promised that you'd be among the
first to know of our new global climate change effort.*

On climate change, the public clamour is in inverse proportion to the
enormity of the long-term threat. If only it were the other way round. And
so, year after year, the people who represent us around the UN negotiating
tables have moved inches, not miles.

The usual rule of newspaper campaigns is that you don't start a fight
unless you know you're going to win it. This one will almost certainly be
won in time: the physics is unarguable. But we are launching our campaign
today in the firm belief that it will also force the issue of climate
change into the boardrooms and inboxes of people who have billions of
dollars at their disposal.

The ask is, we think, both modest and simple. We understand that fund
managers do not like to make sudden changes to their portfolios. *So we ask
that the Gates Foundation and Wellcome Trust commit now to divesting from
the top 200 fossil fuel companies within five years. And that they
immediately freeze any new investment in the same companies. Our ask comes
in the form of a petition that we launched today. *

We will, of course, suggest that the Guardian Media Group does the same,
and keeps you informed about its own deliberations and decisions. *Please
join us*

*To Bill and Melinda Gates, founders of the Bill and Melinda Gates
Foundation; Jeremy Farrar and Sir William Castell, director and chair of
the Wellcome Trust:*

Your organisations have made a huge contribution to human progress and
equality by supporting scientific research and development projects. Yet
your investments in fossil fuels are putting this progress at great risk,
by undermining your long term ambitions.

Climate change poses a real threat to all of us, and it is morally and
financially misguided to invest in companies dedicated to finding and
burning more oil, gas and coal. Many philanthropic organisations are
divesting their endowments from fossil fuels. We ask you to do the same: to
commit now to divesting from the top 200 fossil fuel companies

within five years and to immediately freeze any new investments in those
companies.
