Dear friends,

Last month, a tar sands pipeline project was quietly -- and illegally --
approved by the State Department. That’s right, you read that correctly.

It turns out that the State Department quietly approved a scheme by
Enbridge, a Canadian tar sands company, to avoid public scrutiny and vastly
increase the amount of tar sands it moves across the border via its
“Alberta Clipper” pipeline into Minnesota. The simple truth is that it is
an illegal maneuver that threatens communities in its path and our climate
as a whole.

It's not clear if President Obama or Secretary Kerry are aware of this
happening, so we need to be sure they hear it.

*We need your help to shine a light on this crazy deal*
<http://org.salsalabs.com/dia/track.jsp?v=2&c=yrblwUuKKF9P9mKmb%2BUGOrgXs8oCgL%2Fb>
and to demand they reverse this illegal decision and conduct a full review
of the impacts of piping tar sands into this country on our communities and
climate. With enough sunlight and noise, we may be able to knock some sense
into the administration and turn this decision around.

*Will you add your name to comments we'll be sending straight to the State
Department?*

Enbridge is the same company whose tar sands pipeline spilled into the
Kalamazoo River in Michigan in 2010. Cleanup efforts from that spill --
called the largest inland oil spill in US history -- continue to this day.
Yet, despite its terrible history, Enbridge is trying to use an existing
pipeline not permitted for tar sands to carry tar sands bitumen over the
Canadian border in order to avoid the type of permitting required for
pipelines like the Keystone XL.

Enbridge’s attempt to work around the system makes one thing clear: We are
winning in stopping these pipelines and the tar sands industry is getting
desperate. We can’t let them get away with this chicanery.

We need to send an urgent message to Secretary Kerry and President Obama
that we won’t allow this to fly under the radar.

Our latest report1 shows that despite what the industry may say, rail is no
replacement for tar sands pipelines. So, what that means is every pipeline
we stop equals fewer dirty tar sands being developed. With the climate
crisis knocking on our door every day, each barrel of tar sands left in the
ground is an important barrel.

Stand with us today and say no to this Enbridge-State Department scam.
