Miller" <nancy.miller [at] prodigy.net> Date: Jan 08 01:42PM -0600 To: the Exchange Subject: A matter of concern to us all Dear friends, I invite all of you to join a newly formed group of FUS members who intend to consider the best, most useful ways we can deal with the frightening reality of climate change. Never before has humankind been faced with a multi-faceted challenge so great that it imperils the planet we live on. I doubt that there are any members of the Society who don't acknowledge the very real existence of climate change. I doubt, too, that there are many of us who haven't felt daunted when we've looked around to find ways that we can make a perceivable difference by our own seemingly puny efforts. Nevertheless, I believe that by working together--and with others already engaged in the same critical work--we can make a difference, no matter how small. Our Humanist values and ethic require it. We're probably all agreed, too, that meaningful change has to come from below--the Occupy movement has taught us a lot about that. So let's find, together, the best ways we can muster collective pressure on our leaders, both governmental and societal (corporate!) who hold the keys to making significant--planet-saving--changes. Two very useful recent programs outline the problem and suggest some possible remedies. One is Amy Goodman's interview with Mary Robinson, former president of Ireland, at the UN Conference on Climate Change 2012, at Doha. Her remarks are cogent and powerful. The other is Bill Moyers' January 4 interview with Anthony Leiserowitz, a Yale University climate-change specialist, who gives as clear-eyed an overview of the problem as I have seen. The link to the Mary Robinson interview is at the UN Conference on Climate Change 2012, at Doha. Her remarks are cogent and powerful. The URL that will take you there is http://www.democracynow.org/2012/12/4/fmr_irish_president_mary_robinson_climate. The Moyers program has been archived at http://billmoyers.com/segment/anthony-leiserowitz-on-making-people-care-about-climate-change/. I hope you'll have a chance to see either or both of them. The first meeting of our newly formed group will be at 7:00 pm on Tuesday, January 15, at my home, 1201 Yale Place, Loring Green East, on the corner of 12th Street and LaSalle Avenue, Minneapolis.(You'll want to remember that 12th Street is one way, going east). There is plenty of guest parking, at your left as you come through the entrance off the street. Should there be many already parked on the ground level, you'll find more parking by going up the ramp directly inside the entrance. Please let me know whether you can join us, either by calling me, at 612-333-5135, or emailing me at the address above. And please let me know how many will be coming with you. I hope to see a lot of you! Nancy ========================================================= *** From: "Nancy B. Miller" <nancy.miller [at] prodigy.net> Date: Jan 10 05:54PM -0600 To: the Exchange Subject: Another invitation Dear friends, I must tell you that I have been both disappointed and saddened by the lack of response to my invitation to attend a meeting at my home next Tuesday, January 15, to talk about not just the alarming manifestations of climate change we already see around us but possible courses of action that we--together and with the allies we know are out there--can take to forestall the dark future that's ahead if we don't use our wits, energies, and the time available to us to make a difference--now. I think it would be a rare member of our Society still in denial about the reality of our dilemma and few who would hold that it's too late to tackle the problem. Fewest of all would be members of our congregation who would deny what our Humanist values and ethics require us to recognize: our responsibility to do what we can do. Now. And there are things that can be done to forestall the worst. I'm convinced that UUs have the imagination and commitment to find and carry out those things. The meeting at my place is still on, at 1201 Yale Place, corner of 12th Street and LaSalle, at 7:00 pm next Tuesday, January 15. (Plenty of off-street guest parking is available.) Do put it on your calendars and let me know that you'll be joining the hardy band that has already signed on. Call me, please, at 612-333-5135, or email me at nancy.miller [at] prodigy.net so that I'll know how much coffee to have ready. With hope and confidence in you, Nancy Miller P.S. In addition to two important videos I urged you to watch--Bill Moyers' interview of a level-headed climatologist (http://billmoyers.com/segment/anthony-leiserowitz-on-making-people-care-about-climate-change/) and Amy Goodman's interview of Mary Robinson, articulate former president of Ireland-- http://www.democracynow.org/2012/12/4/fmr_irish_president_mary_robinson_climate --just today, MPR broadcast an impressive conversation regarding our future that you can access by going from mprnews.org to Find a Program to MPR News Presents to Scientists Mann and Hayhoe on the Politics and Science of Climate Change. It's worth a listen. ========================================================= *** From: Phoebe Dahlquist <phoebejquist [at] yahoo.com> Date: Jan 11 05:37AM -0800 To: the Exchange Subject: Another invitation Hi Nancy! I think the meeting is a GREAT idea... and I've been meaning to respond. I have another meeting next Tuesday evening (a monthly one). I was waiting to respond until I talked to Tim - but this hasn't happened, so, I'm not sure if he is able to attend or not. Will the meeting be in your condo? Phoebe Dahlquist p.s. thanks for the links. I plan to look at them over the weekend.... work calls. ========================================================= *** From: cjblomquist [at] comcast.net Date: Jan 11 11:04PM To: the Exchange Subject: Another invitation Sorry to miss this meeting. Having seen the polar bears in Churchhill, Manitoba, I know how vitally important this is. I had another meeting scheduled at the same time, more than a month ago. Letter of the Day (Jan. 12): Weather review told story of climate change , Star Tribune A tip of the hat and a bow to Star Tribune reporter Bill McAuliffe for the superb article on the state's changing weather patterns ("Year in weather '12," Jan. 5). It's precisely the kind of careful examination of changes in our weather needed to educate the populace. Climate change is a very real crisis challenging our world and gaining speed every day. McAuliffe's approach was particularly powerful in telling us about the changes happening in Minnesota. He told the story by referencing the places we all recognize, as well as reminding us of events many of us experienced ourselves. Thanks to McAuliffe and the Star Tribune for bringing public attention to this critical issue. Keep up the good work! NANCY B. This morning I finally read an article which had caught my eye yesterday a.m - front page of the Tribune. It, the article, did not come up last night so it is possible others did not read it. "Rising temps could change landscape of Midwest." It gives information about a report, required by law every four years, but George W. Bush's era missed it, scheduled to go to Obama in March, 2014 "after a public comment period and administration policy policymakers sign off on its conclusions." The public comment period actually started Monday and runs through April 12. Readers can access it, and provide comment, at www.startribune.com/al1999. Included in its assessments of eight U.S. regions are the facts that a 90-mile northward shift of forest habitats will take place along with longer growing periods, increase in demand for air condition affecting the greenhouse emission increase, etc. etc. Ruth ========================================================= *** From: MADELINE SIMON <madeline-mpls [at] msn.com> To: the Exchange Subject: Climate Change Date: Jan 16 12:56PM -0600 Url: http://groups.google.com/group/fus_exchange/msg/983a408466d0134 The url for this article apparently has changed to: http://www.startribune.com/local/186891992.html I hope this works--reminded of the problem with a url Bob sent us, which had no apparent reason for failing. Thanks Ruth. And, if I only indicated in a private email to Nancy, kudos to you for getting your letter on this critical issue published! Peace, Madeline "There are two novels that can change a bookish fourteen-year old's life: The Lord of the Rings and Atlas Shrugged. One is a childish fantasy that often engenders a lifelong obsession with its unbelievable heroes, leading to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood, unable to deal with the real world. The other, of course, involves orcs." "We are star stuff contemplating star stuff."
