Dear Madeline,

This morning, national conservation group American Rivers
unveiled their list of the top ten Most Endangered Rivers in the U.S.  
Minnesota’s St. Louis River made the
list.

Why? The St. Louis River is at a crossroads.  After years of
progress cleaning up past pollution, we now approach a critical decision –
whether to permit the proposed PolyMet sulfide mine.  Pollution from PolyMet
threatens human health and the economic development being spurred by a cleaner
St. Louis River.  In addition, PolyMet would destroy thousands of acres of 
wetlands at the headwaters of the St. Louis River and threaten wild rice 
downstream.

Federal, state, and tribal governments have spent over $1
billion to clean up pollution and environmental damage to the river.  Now we’re
seeing signs of life along the St. Louis.  The City of Duluth just announced a
multi-million dollar initiative to bring tourism and development to the St.
Louis River Corridor.

There’s still a long way to go in cleaning up the St. Louis River, and we can’t 
afford to go backwards.  Pollution from PolyMet would increase the risk of 
mercury-contaminated fish in the St. Louis River, an important fishery.  1 in 
10 infants in the Lake Superior basin of Minnesota are born with unsafe levels 
of mercury.  Mercury is a potent neurotoxin and can cause developmental delays 
in children.

We expect that permits for PolyMet will be proposed later
this year.  We’ll need your help to prevent PolyMet from undoing years of
progress cleaning up pollution.
