The First Mental Retardation Death Sentence Commuted to Life in Alabama Death Penalty Lecture Series presented by Dorsey & Whitney LLP and Minnesota Advocates for Human Rights Wednesday, July 18, 12:00 - 1:00 pm Dorsey & Whitney LLP Seattle Room, 15th Floor 50 South Sixth Street, Minneapolis Bruce Manning will recount Jeremiah Jackson's story from his 1998 trial and death sentence to the beginning of his post-conviction collateral appeal in 2002. Mr. Manning will discuss his pro bono representation of Jeremiah, through an eventually successful commutation of his sentence to life without the possibility of parole. Mr. Jackson's case is one of very few nationwide where a change occurred as a result of Atkins v. Virginia (2002), and it was the first case in Alabama where a sentence of death was commuted because of a finding of mental retardation. This lecture is a brown bag lunch. Beverages will be provided. Application will be made for one CLE credit. Please RSVP to Laura Young at (612) 341-3302 ext. 128 or lyoung [at] mnadvocates.org. Infant Mortality and Health: A Solvable Problem Children's Human Rights Lecture Series presented by Faegre & Benson LLP and Minnesota Advocates Thursday, July 26, 12:00 - 1:00 pm Faegre & Benson LLP The Century Room 2200 Wells Fargo Center, 90 South Seventh Street, Minneapolis Megan Brown, Research Associate at the Children's Defense Fund of Minnesota presents. Annually more than 10 million children under five years of age die primarily from diseases of poverty, including immunizable childhood diseases, malaria, intestinal and respiratory infections, lack of food and clean water, violence, and lack of primary health care. When children die unnecessarily from preventable causes, their most basic human rights are violated. This lecture will discuss the causes and solutions to high infant mortality rates in the world in general and in the U.S. specifically. Lunch will be provided for those who RSVP. For more information or to RSVP, please contact Julia Kashaeva at (612) 341-3302 ext. 127 or jkashaeva [at] mnadvocates.org. Min Y.
