Matthew Woodbury asked: Does anyone out there deal with a cohousing group that is part vegan or even just vegetarian? How does this work with shared meals. At Sharingwood, so far, we have 2 vegetarians and various other allergy sorts of food issues. We maintain a sheet in the kitchen of food preferences/requirements and the cooks work around those, to some degree. WIth our average of 4 meals a week a strict vegetarian could eat well at 2, ok at 1 and marginally at 1. Different cooking teams place different priority on vegetarian preference so those who don't eat chicken when the main dish is chicken might be out of luck. (rice and salad gets pretty boring after awhile). The hard core dietary types, of which there are two, do not participate in our community dinners much. My daughter is very allergic to fish. When fish is served, she eats at home with me ( I seldom participate in community dinner- though not for dietary reasons). One of the gaps in our current system, which was just redone, is that meal menus are not posted so you have to sign up a week in advance, but you don't know what is for dinner. We continue to evolve our community eating strategies. Rob Sandelin Sharingwood
