Disclaimer: This message is being forwarded because of a request from HP and has no connection with the Cohousing Society. Jan Gehl has spent 30 years in evaluative research on the psychology and sociology of medium density housing and the success of the design- throughouut the western world- including California and Canada. His work focuses on collaborative/cooperative/cohousing approaches. I attended a year long series of seminars with Gehl- it appears that his research indicates that a lot of medium density and the surrounding community design concepts in North America are lacking in a variety of ways - Gehl's resultant notions on how to do it better are contrary to what most architects and planners do in North America when it comes to medium and high density housing (including the surrounding neighborhood). Here is one of his books, that has been translated into english-he wrote the first version in 1971! (there are more recent versions): "Life Between The Buildings ...... Using Public Space" published by Van Nostrand Reinhold ISBN 0-442-23011-7 (pbk). As well you can contact him for a list of other books and papers at the School of Architecture at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen, Denmark. Harry (Harry_Pasternak [at] tvo.org)
