The kind of filter you need depends on your water source. In my personal
research, I found solid carbon block to be the best when water is supplied
by a city or town. Multi-Pure makes a top quality under-the-counter water
filter for drinking or cooking water for about $320. A smaller unit is
available for less. Also, consider your shower water. A lot of chlorine can
be absorbed through a long shower--more than you would think. There are
whole house units for about the same price, though you still need a
drinking water filter because whole house units don't filter to the degree
that you would want for drinking.

For well water, other types of units might be more preferable.

I'm happy to snail mail you some information I've collected, including some
comparisons and evaluations.
