        Actually, that's a good idea that cuts both ways.  This is not
quite the same as your suggestion of a separate apartment, but at Greyrock
some of the members are building with the idea of taking in roommates,
either moving with their current ones or getting a roommate after moving
in.  In at least one case that I know of, the anticipated rent from the
roommate is playing a major role in enabling the home owner to build at
all.  The slight increase in mortgage for a larger place will be more than 
offset by the rent.
