I would say it hasn't so much tailed off (beware of thinking that graph looks
like a  normal distribution of a Sample) as 

--stabilized at a more "manageable" level.  I enjoy being on this list, but at
its peak it was totally unmanageable.  I finally threw away about 500 postings,
I think, because I just had no time or energy to read them.  And lots and lots
of folks unsubscribed, I bet, to judge by the distraught messages we got.  

The other factors, I suspect, are 

--the structured archives that some dedicated folks put together that are
available on the WEB, plus 

--the CSF and Gopher archives.  The same questions do come up for lots of
groups, and it's nice that Rob Sandelin doesn't have to re-post his ancient
wisdom as often  (Rob, I hope you realize that it's not that I don't appreciate
your stuff, it's just nice to keep traffic less, for me  :-) ).  

Other ideas?  (How many subscribers do we have these days, can someone tell me? 
I don't want the list.)
