Relevant to the topic of name-calling and other harsh words:

I've long been a crusader for kinder, more respectful, more
compassionate communicating. My community, Heart Song
Community, has agreements that we all make to avoid hurtful
words.

I've recently become a participant in a fascinating new
project called Words Can Heal. Its purpose is to eliminate
verbal violence, curb gossip and promote the healing power of
words to enhance relationships at every level.

Words Can Heal has captured the imagination and commitment of
a coalition of diplomats, CEO's, clergy, Hollywood
celebrities, and community leaders of every type. I've taken
the pledge that follows and will be taking it to HSC for its
use. I invite you to also take the pledge and to introduce it
to your communities for their consideration.

Words Can Heal is promoting the following pledge:

"I pledge to think more about the words I use.

"I will try to see how gossip hurts people, including myself,
and work to
eliminate it from my life.

"I will try to replace words that hurt with words that
encourage, engage and enrich.

"I will not become discouraged when I am unable to choose
words perfectly, because making the world a better place is
hard work.

"And I am pledging to do that, one word at a time."

If you'd like to learn more about Words Can Heal, see
http://www.wordscanheal.org. I urge you to read Goldie Hawn's
speech to the National Press Club about the project. I have a
heightened respect for her because of it.

Namaste,
Michael
