The early work that in my opinion will best serve your community visioning
is to have people work on what their vision of community is. There are many
good visioning excercises available, in fact a search of the internet on the
term visioning returned some good stuff just now. When I have done work with
early groups I tend to have them think about the actions they would do to
support a sense of community. Then we go through those lists, and pick out
things they can do NOW, long before any buildings happen. I think this sets
a tone that community is what you do for each other, and with that idea in
place, the group can form some close bonds which will help you down the road
in real estate development phase as things get expensive, complex, and
scary.

Subject: [C-L]_mission statement question

We are a very new group forming in Los Angeles. Our second meeting is in a
couple of weeks and we want to take the oft-given advice to create a mission
statement early on by looking at some existing ones. I did a search in the
[C-L] archives and found some good ones but I have a question about where a
mission statement ends and a list of specific goals starts. For example: is
it the place to describe the hoped for site (lots of trees, near mass
transit...) or the types of common facilities desired (guest room,
playground, gym...)?
Since the statement will be used in part to filter out people that are not
on the same page, and recruit those that are, shouldn't it be specific about
the non-negotiable elements? Or does that make for trouble down the road?
