Cohousing possibility in historic Lanesboro Minnesota

One of our local Minnesota cooperative development organizations
(Northcountry Cooperative Development Fund) is exploring the opportunity
to create an artist's housing cooperative in a historic building in
Lanesboro, MN. Those of you who vacation in Minnesota may know Lanesboro
as the quaint town on the Root River, hub of canoeing and biking trails
and the town with the most bed-and-breakfasts per capita of anywhere in
the US. Or maybe as home to the Commonweal Theater, Cornucopia Art
Center, an outstanding gourmet restauarant and the Eagle Bluff
Environmental Learning Center. Anyway, in talking with the folks who are
looking at creating the housing cooperative, I suggested to them that it
might make an ideal cohousing community since there is already lots of
space in the building that would lend itself to serving as "Commons
House" space. They are thinking of expanding the original concept from
artist's community to also accomodate some seniors and "non-artists".
It is walkable to downtown (everywhere in Lanesboro is!) and green space
for kids to play. There's potential for about 14 or 15 households. Is
there any interest out in Cohousing-L land for such a community? You can
go to the web site for the city (www.lanesboro.com) if you want to know
more about the place. It's a 4 minute drive to Rochester MN and about 2
hours to the Twin Cities. If you are interested, you can contact me via
e-mail or go to the www.ncdf.coop web site and use the "contact us"
address to get more info.
