A number of members at Wasatch Commons are philosophically inclined to
manual tools. Others regard them as recreational items -- nice when you are
interested in exercise or meditation, but not when you're serious about
getting something accomplished. So we have both manual reel mowers,
handsaws, broadfork, etc., and power mowers, chain saws, weed trimmer,
tiller, etc.

Most of our trees are Siberian elms, which produce millions of flat
fingernail-size seeds in the spring. The seeds are too fine to rake up
efficiently, and a rake would tend to damage the woolly thyme and other
groundcovers along the central path anyway (several thousand sq ft). The
seeds make the path look messy for several months every year, and the
seedlings have to be pulled by hand.

Every spring some of us have talked about purchasing a leaf blower/vacuum to
slurp them up, and I expect that at some point we'll do it. Since the cost
is well within the landscaping committee's annual maintenance budget, the
committee doesn't need community permission to make the purchase, only
consensus within the committee. Anyone using it would be expected to abide
by the quiet hours agreement.
