Wiscon is the world's only feminist science fiction convention held annually on Memorial Day weekend in Madison Wisconsin. They are looking for participants in discussion panels. I noticed that there are a couple of panels that might be of interest to cohousers. Political, Economic, and Social IssuesOur place in this world is often heavily shaped by the economic and political climate around us. What fiction have you read that deals with such issues especially well or poorly? What issues affect your life as a feminist? What effect do current events have on your writing or reading?
An Unsustainable World (0000001062) What do we think we are doing? Suggested by Eleanor A. Arnason 02/11/2004 Do you think we should run this panel? Please! Yes Maybe No No Opinion Community: The Darker Side (0000001345)Fans tend to speak of community with romanticism bordering on reverence. Granted, community is what many of us lack in our urban, 21st-century existences. There are things that community can give us that we desperately need: fellowship, a social safety net, a feeling of belonging, a set of values with which to structure our lives, a sense of continuity with the past and future. But when people leave small towns and head for the big city, it's often for very good reasons. Communities enforce norms (sometimes very strictly), exclude or scapegoat people, conflict with the desire for privacy, and sometimes erupt in feuds. And being a member of a community, even a strong and healthy one, even the "right" community for a particular person, may not meet all of that person's needs. What are some of the drawbacks of community? How can we recognize these drawbacks as we build community? What do we expect from community that it can't deliver?
Suggested by Janet M. Lafler 03/03/2004 Do you think we should run this panel? Please! Yes Maybe No No Opinion To view the complete idea list for programs and to vote, visit:http://216.39.144.179/WisConWeb/(o31fogf2rxj51t45yuqunbry)/ ProgramIdea.aspx#category_Political_Economic_and_Social_Issues.
