While I understand the intense need to "circle our 
progressive/liberal wagons and fight" as it were, I too feel a strong 
need to keep working for change but reach out to healing and more 
understanding. 

Tell you good friend that he should come to your cohousing 
community as a "stealth" republican. (smile) that is, he can come 
and talk to people and when everyone sees all the good qualities 
you respect in him he can surprise them by saying "yep, but I 
totally disagree with you politically."   I would hope there was room 
for political diversity within cohousing as well as 
age/racial/gender/sexual orientation...

So, no, you aren't alone even though as I said, I understand the 
urge to pull into "us v. them" mode.
