Thanks Fred! For those of you who can't view Flash websites, here are the particulars of the presentation in case you are in the area and able to come. Living together is the literal translation of the Danish word bofællesskaber, the concept of cohousing which the Danes pioneered in the mid 1960's. In Fall 2004, the co-founders of Schemata Workshop, architects Grace Kim and Mike Mariano, spent two months in Denmark researching over 20 cohousing communities. The research focused on the function and design of the Common House (or faellushus). Through extended visits, interviews, and participation in community meals Grace and Mike were able to obtain insights to how these communities have sustained and grown over the past thirty years. The open house will provide an opportunity to view some of the photos taken during their research as well as floor plans of the housing and site plans for the overall communities. A one hour presentation will provide detailed information about the Common House and its role in the overall design of the physical environment as well as the social cohesion of the community. The event is sponsored by Schemata Workshop, an architectural collaborative located in Seattle. Grant funding for the research was provided by the University of Washington Valle Scholar Program. Date: Thursday, April 28 Time: 4-8pm Open House 6pm Slide presentation Location: Commons at the Northwest Work Lofts 3131 Western Avenue Seattle, WA 98121 Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions. 1.800.358.1589 or grace [at] schemataworkshop.com -----Original Message----- From: Fred H Olson [mailto:fholson [at] cohousing.org] Sent: Monday, April 04, 2005 6:35 AM To: -cohousing-L mailing list Cc: Grace Kim Subject: Seattle/Web Danish cohousing presentation 4/28/05 Grace Kim <grace [at] schemataworkshop.com> is the author of the message below. I received a grant from the University of Washington to spend 2 months in Copenhagen last fall to study Danish cohousing. We lived in an apartment near the center of the city and spent a lot of time traveling around Sjealand and up to Aarhus and Randers. Many of the communities we visited were 20-35 years old, and a few that had recently started. Many of the older ones I had never even heard of prior to my trip. You can download the invitation (which contains a few photos and brief program description as well as map to the building) from our website by clicking on "current". http://www.schemataworkshop.com << Requires flash player ... Fred>> If you have troubles, please contact me directly and I can send you a link directly to the PDF. Hopefully by the end of the week, we'll have some photos of each community under the "research" section, so please check back. grace h. kim, aia principal schemata workshop an architectural collaborative 159 western ave west #483 seattle wa 98119 206.285.1589 voice 206.285.2701 fax http://www.schemataworkshop.com
