I too was very sad to hear about the disbanding of Brooklyn Cohousing. I attended some of their meetings. It was a very impressive group. Raines, you mentioned the nasty comments in the NY Times article. There's a well-known commune named Ganas in Staten Island that lives up to everyone's notions about communes, including a charismatic founder/leader, a shared ideology, shared income, all shared meals, extensive partner-swapping, etc. It got a lot of coverage a few years ago when a resident who was asked to leave stalked one of the founding members for several years and eventually shot and nearly killed him. When I mention cohousing in New Jersey, people often say "Oh, you mean like that place in Staten Island?" Well, no, I have to explain, it's NOTHING like that place in Staten Island!
