Am I to understand that egocentrism is universal? If so, is it inevitable? If it is inevitable and universal, is it more adaptive than maladaptive? WT
Wayne:I am not sure how you define egocentrism? Selfness? Adaptive vs maladaptive? Or what illustrations you might have in the context of CoHousing living? If I understand you, in my opinion, yes it is universal with a mixture of adapative and maladaptive depending on the situation.
Reality teaches me daily that we live in an imperfect world with imperfect human beings in all our wonder, diversity, flaws and the laws of our land attempts to address individual/social injustices.
Seems to me your question will ultimately take us to the basic questions that philosophy and religion deals with: (1.) Metaphysics (what exists; impersonal origin of universe vs. personal origin of university) (2) Morals: the dilemma of human nature in all our imperfection and at time cruelty (wars, Auschwitze etc.) yet with incredible accomplishments (i.e. arts, music, literature, etc) (3) Epistemology (theory of knowledge).
Of course, Plato understood we need absolutes or nothing has meaning and Jean-Paul Sarte: raised the "basic questions that there is a finitie universe (existence) without meaning unless it has an infinite reference."
I don’t think your question desires a discussion of the various philosophic and religions possibilities and answers? So it seems from the context from Lynn message on October 4th, personality typing can enhance our appreciation each other gifts and abilities; celebrating diversity together in Community.

the lesson is that
we have diverse gifts. The best thing for community is to recognize that (a) these differences are real, and (b) they are all potentially gifts to the community.
