Re: Privacy for Introverts

When the design allows (less possible in denser urban projects), I think
it is optimal to be able to provide everyone with a ³community-side²
useable front porch, and a more private fenceable back yard. In our
community, Nevada City Cohousing, people can fence their backyards with
approval of the design from neighbhors on both sides and posting of the
design in the common house for 2 weeks so that anyone who has questions or
objections can talk to them. In my previous community, the much more urban
Doyle Street Cohousing there was no option for back yards and even the
front areas were shared gathering nodes. Different properties and
densities allow for different options.

Personally, my goal would be to create options so that people can feel
more comfortable in community over the long term by providing a variety of
options. I don¹t think asking for a more private backyard, when the
design/property allows for it, says anything about people¹s commitment to
community, but might allow people that have higher needs for more privacy
to live in community over the long term.
