You might want to get in touch with Camelot Cohousing, in Massachusetts. The nucleus of the group, as I understand it, consisted of people who shared an interest in Society for Creative Anachronism--Renaissance Faire types, in other words. On a tour, I saw that one of the ways that shared interest expressed itself was in a sewing-room-on-steroids in their common house (think costume production). I don't know that they made that shared interest a formal requirement for homeownership though, nor how strong a theme that remains in the community. Worth asking about, perhaps.
